Richard J. Kearns, M.D., has been in practice for over 20 years in Houston. He limits his practice to hip and knee replacement surgery with special interests in hip replacements for the young patient with avascular necrosis, congenital hip dislocation/dysplasia, Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, and arthritis of the hip. He is experienced with implantation of titanium, porous ingrowth, ceramic, metal-on-metal, and acetabular resurface replacement hip implants. "Mini" hip incisions are used whenever possible.
For the younger and older arthritic knee patient, uni-compartmental or rotating platform knee replacements are employed when indicated. Dr. Kearns is also performing quadriceps sparing and "mini" incision knee replacements for older and younger adults. He also performs traditional, time-tested methods with time tested materials for patients.
Dr. Kearns is a leader in the total hip and knee community and is extremely well regarded by both his physician peers and the thousands of patients he has treated. Dr. Kearns does not rely on residents and students to assist with surgery, as he insists on completing all aspects of surgery himself utilizing his extensive surgical experience. In addition, Dr. Kearns prefers to round on his own patients during their hospital stay in order to keep the continuity of care clean and concise. Dr. Kearns believes that patients much prefer to see their own surgeon post operatively to avoid any miscommunication.
Past appointments include Chief of Orthopedics at Ben Taub Hospital, Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine and Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at New York Medical College.
Patients may either select Texas Orthopedic Hospital or The Methodist Hospital for their admission and surgery. Texas Orthopedic Hospital is the only area institution with less than expected complication rates for total hip revision and total knee revision in the Houston area.
