Jay C. Oates, M.D., is noted for his work in the foot and ankle subspecialty of orthopedic surgery.

In addition to his active staff appointments to Texas Orthopedic Hospital and The Methodist Hospital, Dr. Oates has consulting staff appointments to St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital and the Memorial Hermann Hospital Southwest.

Dr. Oates has achieved the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor, Division of Orthopedic Surgery, Baylor College of Medicine. He serves as orthopedic consultant to Houston's Veterans Administration Hospital Rheumatology Foot Clinic.

A native of Beaumont, Texas, Dr. Oates received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology at Vanderbilt University. He continued his studies at Baylor College of Medicine, receiving his Medical Doctorate in 1975. A year of internship at St. Joseph's Hospital, directed by Dr. Herbert L. Fred, was followed by four years of orthopedic surgery residency within the Baylor College of Medicine program. Dr. Oates was awarded a fellowship in foot and ankle surgery at Samuel Merritt Hospital, Oakland, California, supervised by Dr. Roger A. Mann. Dr. Oates currently participates as an instructor in the University of Texas Houston foot and ankle fellowship program.

Dr. Oates has published articles and given presentations on the subjects of metatarsophalangeal joint arthrodesis, fractures of the os calcis, and ruptures of the tendo achilles.
