Meet Dr. Igwilo-Alaneme
Rita Igwilo-Alaneme, M.D., M.S. is an infectious diseases physician specializing in the management of complex orthopedic and musculoskeletal infections, while also providing comprehensive care for a broad range of infectious diseases. She brings advanced expertise in prosthetic joint infections, surgical site infections, and device-related infections, with a focus on complex infection management.
Dr. Igwilo-Alaneme completed her infectious diseases fellowship at Mayo Clinic, where she also trained in the orthopedic infectious diseases subspecialty track. She holds a post-doctoral Master’s degree in Clinical and Translational Science from Mayo Clinic and completed her internal medicine residency at Montefiore Medical Center.
Her clinical practice includes the diagnosis and management of infections involving bones, joints, and implanted devices, as well as a wide spectrum of infectious diseases in both hospitalized and outpatient settings. She works closely with orthopedic surgeons, bridging infectious diseases and orthopedic surgery for optimal recovery. Her approach emphasizes coordinated, evidence-based care, and infection prevention.
Dr. Igwilo-Alaneme has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, including work in Clinical Infectious Diseases and Journal of Bone and Joint Infection and has presented at national and international conferences such as Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) and Musculoskeletal Infection Society (MSIS). Her research focuses on improving treatment strategies and outcomes in musculoskeletal and device-related infections.
She is a member of the MSIS, IDSA, European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, and the HIV Medicine Association.
