Understanding Knee Arthroplasty

Knee replacement is also known as knee arthroplasty, and its most common use is to treat trauma and arthritis. If you have a condition that has caused the joint in your knee to deteriorate, your doctor may recommend this surgery. During the procedure, a surgeon resurfaces both ends of the joint and the kneecap (patella) with metal and plastic parts, restoring mobility while reducing the pain the patient experienced.

Who Is a Candidate for Knee Replacement Reconstruction?

Knee arthroplasty is an advanced treatment for knee pain, meaning most people go through other, more conservative treatments before their provider recommends full replacement. For that reason, most people getting knee replacements are older adults who have dealt with knee pain for some time. Still, anyone can be a candidate, especially if:

  • Treatments like injections and physical therapy fail to address your pain.
  • You experience stiffness, pain and difficulty moving daily.
  • You have arthritis or another condition that causes bone-on-bone damage.

Preparing and Recovering From Your Procedure

During your initial consultation, we’ll discuss your health and goals for treatment and complete a full exam before scheduling your procedure. Because you’ll go under anesthesia, you may also need to fast in the hours leading up to your surgery.

On the day of your surgery, you will need someone to drive you home from our outpatient surgical center. Our procedures are minimally invasive, so most people are cleared to return home on the same day as their appointment.

Everyone’s recovery journey is different, and it can take months for you to feel comfortable with the new prosthetics. Most people can start incorporating their normal activities back into their lives within six weeks, as long as they follow the provider’s directions and do not experience complications. Full recovery may take a few months or up to a year, depending on the patient’s situation.
