Lower Leg Anatomy
In your lower leg, the tibia, or shinbone, bears most of your lower leg’s weight and helps form the knee joint with the femur (thighbone) and forms the inner ankle at the bottom. The fibula is the thinner lower leg bone. It attaches to the tibia near the knee and helps form the ankle joint.
The Achilles tendon connects your calf muscles to your heel. This thick tendon handles significant force and helps you walk, bend, jump, run and stand on tiptoe. Nerves carry signals between your brain and lower leg to support balance, muscle control and sensation. Your lower leg muscles help power everyday movement and sports activities.
