Common Neck Conditions
Neck conditions often result from wear and tear or injury.
Cervical Stenosis
Cervical stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal in the neck that can put pressure on the spinal cord and nerves, causing weakness or numbness in your limbs and extremities as well as neck pain. Cervical stenosis often develops with age, though neck injuries can also contribute.
Herniated Disc
When a disc is damaged and the interior nucleus can ooze out, this is known as a herniated disc, or a ruptured or slipped disc. It can result from injury or aging. When a herniated disc occurs in the neck, it can cause sharp pain in the shoulder and arm.
Cervical Radiculopathy
This condition is where a nerve root becomes compressed, irritated or inflamed. It can be caused by age, slipped discs, bone spurs or disc degeneration. Treatment usually involves immobilization, pain management and physical therapy, though steroid injections or surgery may be needed in some cases.
Whiplash
Whiplash is a soft-tissue injury that can affect muscles, ligaments, discs, joints and nerve roots. It can happen in a car accident or any sudden back-and-forth motion.
Whiplash can cause pain, swelling, stiffness, dizziness, numbness, headaches and muscle spasms. Many cases resolve within weeks, but some patients experience long-term symptoms.
